Affordable micrometers for inkjet printing and rapid manufacturing

This article presents work by the NTS-Group and focuses on the considerations that led to motion system layout/detail design choices specifically for inkjet printers and rapid manufacturing machines.

Where series products are concerned, the price/performance ratio is always a decisive factor for making the final choice.

De NTS-Group maakt de overname bekend van GMZ Precision in Schaijk. Bij dit bedrijf, dat met draai- en freesbewerkingen hoogwaardige componenten produceert, werken 14 mensen. Alle medewerkers worden overgenomen door NTS. Marc Hendrikse, CEO van de NTS-Group: “Klanten van de NTS-Group vragen ons meer en meer voor de gehele ontwikkeling van modules en machines. Met de overname van GMZ Precision bevestigen wij echter ook onze rol als producent van modules en componenten.”

De NTS-Group concentreert zich op het ontwikkelen en produceren van opto-mechatronische systemen en mechanische modules. Hierbij is de productie van kritische componenten een onmisbare schakel. De NTS-Group omvat daarom naast ontwikkel- en assemblagebedrijven ook bedrijven die zich concentreren op het fabriceren van onderdelen uit plaatwerk en  verspaning. In het laatste segment is onder andere NTS Mans in Bergeijk actief. De overname van GMZ Precision zal de positie van NTS op dit vlak versterken. De activiteiten van NTS Mans en GMZ Precision zullen in de loop van 2011 dan ook worden samengevoegd op één locatie om optimale synergievoordelen te behalen.

Met de toetreding tot de NTS-Group krijgen de bestaande klanten van GMZ Precision toegang tot een breder competentie- en capaciteitsspectrum voor de ondersteuning van hun business. Voor de huidige klanten van de NTS-Group worden de flexibiliteit en capaciteit op het gebied van verspanen verder vergroot. Daarmee reageert de NTS-Group op de sterk stijgende vraag van haar klanten om naast de ontwikkeling, ook de productie van kritische componenten in de volle breedte te verzorgen. Hierbij zijn zaken als snelheid, flexibiliteit en kwaliteit bepalend voor het succes.

De positieve marktontwikkelingen bij bestaande klanten en de groei in de omzet bij nieuwe (inter)nationale klanten hebben er toe geleid dat de NTS-Group zowel op het gebied van omzet als op het gebied van resultaat een recordkwartaal achter de rug heeft. Met gerichte investeringen blijft de NTS-Group zich versterken om aan de toegenomen vraag van haar klanten te voldoen. Marc Hendrikse: “Een zeer goed eerste kwartaal bevestigt ons vertrouwen dat 2011 wederom een financieel sterk jaar wordt. De overname van GMZ Precision past in ons streven naar de completering van onze propositie.”

NTS-Group breidt engineering uit met overname BrainCenter Zuid.

NTS Development Support B.V. en biedt OEM’s extra ontwikkelcompetentie De NTS-Group maakt vandaag de overname van het bedrijf BrainCenter Zuid bekend, dat onder de naam NTS Development Support B.V. (NTS-DS) als een 100% dochter van de NTSGroup verder gaat. Marc Hendrikse, CEO van de NTS-Group: “Klanten van de NTS-Group vragen ons meer en meer voor de gehele ontwikkeling van modules en machines. Hiertoe is expertise van complexe en hoogwaardige systemen nodig. Deze expertise kunnen we met de kennis en know how van de medewerkers van BrainCenter Zuid uitbreiden.
Bovendien worden de huidige detacheringactiviteiten van de NTS-Group versterkt. Met NTS Development Support zorgt de NTS-Group voor een ‘intrinsieke’ betrokkenheid bij de ontwikkelingen van onze klanten. Klanten kunnen bij één leverancier terecht voor zowel de engineering op locatie, als de ontwikkeling én de productie van hun machines. Dit betekent meer efficiency omdat ontwikkelkennis en maakkennis optimaal aan elkaar gekoppeld worden.”

Op 16 december 2009 hebben NTS-Group en Sioux Group besloten om nog nauwer met elkaar samen te gaan werken. Sioux Group wordt de belangrijkste partner van NTS op het gebied van embedded software en NTS-Group wordt de belangrijkste partner van Sioux voor opto-mechatronische modules en systemen. Sioux en NTS hebben al een aantal machines en modules gezamenlijk ontwikkeld en geproduceerd, met de Phenom elektronenmicroscoop als bekendste voorbeeld. Omdat de twee bedrijven sinds 2005 met succes met elkaar samenwerken, hebben beide directies besloten elkaars preferred partners te worden. Marc Hendrikse, CEO van NTS-Group en Hans Duisters, CEO van Sioux Group: ‘Wij verwachten dat deze nauwe samenwerking de ontwikkeling van onze beide ondernemingen zeer positief zal beïnvloeden. We merken dat OEM’s steeds meer verantwoordelijkheden bij ons willen neerleggen. De ervaringen die we in dit partnership hebben opgebouwd, geven ons het volste vertrouwen in de toekomstige samenwerking.’

In het licht van dit besluit wordt Sioux Group mede-aandeelhouder in Phenom-World BV. In 2005 zijn FEI, NTS en Sioux als partners de ontwikkeling van de Phenom gestart. Phenom-World BV is in november 2009 opgericht om de marketing, verkoop en service activiteiten van de Phenom elektronenmicroscoop, die voorheen door FEI Company vermarkt werd, voort te zetten. NTSGroup en Sioux Group hebben na de deelname door Sioux een gelijk belang in Phenom-World BV, waarbij NTS-Group de zeggenschap behoudt. Met deze deelname bestaan de aandeelhouders van Phenom-World BV dus uit NTS-Group, Sioux en FEI.

Tevens heeft Sioux Group met de aandeelhouders van NBG Industrial Automation afgesproken om de meerderheid van de aandelen per 1 januari aanstaande over te nemen. NBG ontwikkelt en produceert elektronica voor medische en industriële toepassingen. Daarnaast heeft zij verstand van software voor embedded besturingen en motion. NBG en NTS-Group werken al jarenlang samen. Ook NTS-Group zal haar aandelenpakket in NBG per 1 januari 2010 verkopen aan Sioux Group. Dit betekent dat Sioux Group per die datum ook de zeggenschap over NBG krijgt. Hiermee wordt Sioux Group tevens de partner van NTS-Group op het gebied van bijvoorbeeld de Mechatronic Backbone, die NTS-Group samen met NBG in april 2009 op de markt heeft gebracht.

Met de overname van NBG haalt Sioux elektronica specialisten in huis om volledige embedded systemen in eigen beheer te kunnen ontwikkelen en produceren.

FEI Company retains a minority stake in this new BV (limited company)

The NTS Group has announced its majority participation in Phenom-World BV, a new limited company founded on November,3 to realise the marketing, sales and service of Phenom. FEI Company, which has so far been responsible for the marketing and sales of the Phenom, has retained a minority stake and is co-shareholder of this BV.

Participation in Phenom-World fits in with the strategy of NTS since the NTS Group was already responsible for the entire production of the Phenom. What is new is the involvement of NTS in the marketing of the Phenom and the newest developments which will take place on the basis of the current product. Marc Hendrikse, CEO of the NTS Group: “Our relationship with FEI Company is hereby being extended and allows us to proactively cooperate in new developments on the basis of the Phenom concept.”

NTS Group develops, manufactures and optimises opto-mechatronic systems, modules and components for a customer base of international machine builders (OEMs). The NTS Group is increasingly being invited to participate with major OEMs in the initiation, definition and concept phase due to its knowledge, know-how and capacity to collaborate on a conceptual level. As a result, customers sometimes involve the NTS Group in marketing, sales and service activities. When asked to be involved, the NTS Group checks whether this activity benefits the system suppliers in the group. If this is so, and the business case of the marketing, sales and service organisation is profitable, the NTS Group will occasionally link up with its customers in this respect. In case involvement does follow on from this consideration, this is organised via participation in separate BV’s that come into the market under their own name. Phenom-World BV, the organisation that will be responsible for the marketing, sales and service of the Phenom, was established on November,3 2009 and will implement product innovation using the knowledge that derives from direct customer contacts. The NTS Group will take the lead in this Phenom-World BV with John Berghmans, former CEO of the NTS Group, heading the BV for the time being and building the team that will comprise people from both NTS, FEI and outside.

In addition to the joint construction of the Phenom-World BV, the NTS Group and  FEI plan to extend NTS’ strategic supplier relationship with FEI.
